I love putting makeup on! I have always been in love with it! I went to university with makeup on, I go for walks with makeup on, hey, I even apply makeup just to go to the local grocery shops! Yes, that’s how addicted I am! But I have never compromised on the health of my skin. With years of research and experience with makeup, I have adopted a particular routine in life and abide by it to keep that lovely dewy skin of mine.
For those of you who are new to makeup, or even those who are like me but uninformed, let me tell you this: several things related to makeup can damage your skin, and there is a proper way to go about it in order to avoid such a tragedy. And right here, right now, I am going to tell you what to do and what not to do.
First of all, make it a habit to always buy mineral based makeup which are basically made with natural ingredients and don’t contain harsh chemicals or toxic metals that would agitate and aggravate skin cells. You’d be surprised at how much money you’ll be saving by switching your makeup to mineral based.
Second, make sure the makeup you do buy, has sunscreen. SPF 15 or higher would do the job. Most brands these days, make foundations or/and moisturizers that contain SPF. A higher SPF will provide stronger protection from the harmful UVB emitted from the sun that can cause skin to age and worse, it can cause cancer.
Now that we have good natural makeup that contains SPF, I would like to emphasize on a night routine of cleaning the makeup off, either with makeup remover or with jojoba oil, and toning and moisturizing the skin before going to bed with a night moisturizer. Doing this prevents clogging of pores and removes any chances of bacterial invasion. And applying a night moisturizer helps the skin to rejuvenate and repair itself while hydrating it.
Also, for a person who loves makeup, and doesn’t want to risk a skin breakout or worse, severe reactions to old makeup, replacing makeup every 4 to 6 months would be a good idea. Old makeup can have bacterial colonies that will eventually feast on beautiful skin and ruin it. So its best to throw away old makeup.
Most people who use makeup never go a day without it, and those are the ones who end up at the dermatologist’s office with acne, and reactionary blotches in response to constant use of makeup. Ladies, you are beautiful as it is, you don’t need makeup every minute of every hour of every day! Take a day out every week and give your skin a breather where you don’t put on any makeup at all! Just like when you take a day off from work everyday. Your skin needs it too!

Last, but not the least, keep a healthy diet. Drink lots of water and eat lots of fruits and vegetables that contain essential vitamins and minerals that aid in skin regeneration and boosts collagen production – which in turn prevents aging. Avoid alcohol and smoking as this speeds up aging of skin – no one wanting a beautiful skin should smoke or drink!
So this is it! Take these proactive measures to keep your skin healthy while enjoying makeup and looking pretty!
