Isn’t shaving your legs the most boring part of your routine, I mean, doing it every day for fear of that prickly day old sensation, really makes it more tiresome and monotonous than an act of grooming! Wouldn’t you agree?
But what if I said there are techniques and tips on keeping them smooth for longer than a day? What if I assure you would not need to shave on a daily basis and yet have smooth legs without the usual prickly stubble after less than 24 hours? Every girl’s ‘dream come true’, right? Ha-ha, I thought so too!
So here it is, the easiest and inexpensive ways to keep those calves smooth and shiny, prepped for any day!
So, after years of painful prickly stubble appearing the very next day of shaving my legs, I finally did some trial and error experiments, and figured a few things out that I had been doing wrong all these years! No wonder I had those nicks and cuts, and bumpy ingrown hairs that seemed to love living inside the skin and making my life miserable. And now, with my tried and tested methods, my legs remain hair free for at least 4 to 5 days, sometimes a whole week and that too, after a single shave.!
The first of my mistakes, and I know many busy girls are guilty of it too, is using single blade disposable razors. Single blades cannot reach all hairs in every angle of especially the under knee area and around the ankles, and can leave one or several spots of hair-eek! Furthermore, a dull blade can cause a cut, or worse, an infection of the hair follicle; both leading to unsightly redness, scars and bumps, shattering the dream for silky smooth legs. You need to invest in a good 4 to 5 blade razor whose blade head you can keep changing after it becomes dull (probably after five or ten shaves). In addition, find one that also has a strip of aloe Vera or similar antibacterial plus moisturizing chemical to both prevent infection and moisturize as you go.
Many a time, I would go shave just as soon as I get up off the bed in the morning, after taking note of the grizzly bear I became overnight, literally! This practice, however, did end up giving me ingrown hair and same-day stubble. You see, when we sleep at night, our legs swell and that causes the hair to retreat back into their follicles, hence, a shave right after you wake up makes for an incomplete shave and later in the day, you’re sure to find stubble. So either shave before going to bed, or wait a good twenty minutes before picking up a razor and attacking your legs-finding stubble and ingrown hair will only frustrate you more, trust me.
Anyway, so one of my many mistakes was that I used to shave my legs when they were dry. Now, a girl needs to have hair-free legs too, but not everyone can afford to spend 10 extra minutes in the shower every day. Still, this is one of the biggest reasons my legs wouldn’t stay smooth and hair began to regrow the same day. My tip for those who do the same: Try shaving in the shower, and that too at least 10 minutes after being in there, after gentle exfoliating. A good but gentle scrub of the legs gets rid of any dead skin and frees the hair to be shaved right off (you can either purchase a separate body scrub, use a homemade scrub, or simply use a loofah with your usual shower gel- I personally use a loofah with my shower gel). The luke warm water will soften and relax the hair as well as open up the follicles, before you start shaving, and that way you manage a closer shave. Also, lathering up with soap just does more bad than good, so if you want to splurge, get one of those moisturizing shaving gels or creams, or if not, you can simply use hair conditioner. That’s right, I’m not kidding, hair conditioner softens the leg hair in just the same way it softens your tresses, plus it makes for an longer adhering prepping lotion and the razor easily glides up your leg with almost nil risk of cuts and bumps.
This next tip is a no brainer, and nothing new, but it requires a mention and emphasis all the same. Shave against the hair growth. Even if you are in a hurry and just want to get done with shaving in half time, you still need to make one swift upward motion in a given area, keeping a light hand so as to not nick yourself. Shaving along the hair growth will not give smooth, hair free legs; there will always be hairs left, albeit tiny and almost not visible to the naked eye, but one touch and you will be able to feel the tiny hair. Therefore, always shave upward, against the hair growth, if you want super smooth sexy legs!
Finally, after following all the tips mentioned above, and after shaving, moisturize, moisturize, and moisturize those calves! The more you moisturize, the more your legs remain smooth and the hair that regrows, grows softer with less chance of ingrown hair or prickly stubble.
So whose up for smoother, hair free legs without the daily ritual of shaving?!
