As winters take on a full swing, we pull out our trendy winter clothes, warm boots and woolly beanies, but in all that preparation to look uber chic, we forget our skin needs the greatest care of all. Our skin starts suffering by our decisions made with lack of awareness, be it with skin care, makeup routines or our diet.
Following are 8 common mistakes women make in winters, that cause dull looking skin, flakiness and occasionally, even acne breakouts. Correct these and stand out looking glowy, and radiant with flawless, plumped up and hydrated skin, despite the cold weather and be the cause for everyone’s envy!
First and foremost mistake everyone, including myself, is guilty of, is lingering in hot showers, trying to overcome the chilly and biting-cold weather! A ten-minute hot shower is one thing, but just standing under the running hot water, enjoying the heat can be the reason your skin dries out and looks ashen. Beware ladies; this simple routine step during winters can damage the lipid layer of our skin that aids in locking in moisture to keep our skin soft and supple. Switch to taking quick showers with water that is neither too hot, nor too uncomfortable. Find an in between warm mix of water and enjoy a relaxing shower, without compromising on skin health.
Prevention is better than cure!
We commonly enjoy our appearances, sometimes without making an extra effort to protect or care for ourselves, until we see the effects such as dullness, dryness and/or wrinkles, among others. Instead of waiting for damage to be done, why not prepare for the damages beforehand and totally combat them before they occur? By upping the ante on moisturizer, of course! When you feed your skin so much of moisture locking lotions and oils, you basically don’t even give it a chance to dry out and create wrinkles. So stock up on coconut and olive oils, or go all out and splurge on high-end moisturisers and body butters.
Don’t go to bed with naked lips!
That’s right! We can barely go to bed without clothes and quilts in winters, then why let our lips suffer the brunt of cold weather! With constant cold weather outdoors and drying heat indoors, our lips can get prone to cracking and losing color. Apply a rich lip balm or layer your lippies with Vaseline petroleum jelly before going to bed to keep your lips hydrated throughout the night.
Yes! Just because it’s winter, does not mean the sun can’t hurt you anymore! It can still cause your skin to age, cause spots and sunburns, and cause uneven skin tone. Do not skip out on SPF. That is a fact all year round, and winter is no exception! Make sure your moisturizer or/and your foundation; both have an SPF of at least 30 to block out the harmful rays of the sun.
Don’t ignore your hands and feet!
Why go for manicures and pedicures when you’ll be wearing gloves and boots anyway, right? Wrong! Okay, so maybe you cant spend a fortune on professional manicures and pedicures, but you should at the very least take good care of hands and feet, so that they’re not completely hardened and rough by the time spring comes around. A daily ten-minute warm water soak followed by applying a generous layer of plain old petroleum jelly and finally covering with gloves and socks, can keep your extremities soft throughout winter. Or if daily is too much hard work, a weekly routine of the same will still serve the cause. Your hands and feet will thank you when spring finally approaches and you swap the gloves and boots for delicate hand jewelry and pretty sandals!
Waterproof your makeup!
If you think waterproof makeup is only for summer, think again! The chill factor combined with the icy wind can sting your eyes and cause them to tear up, and hence causing your carefully done cat-eyes and mascara to run, turning you into a raccoon within minutes. Choosing waterproof liner and mascara even in winters will probably be one of the best decisions you’ve made thus far.
Prevent static hair!
We love donning the hat or the really cute beanie, but can we take it off without our hair standing on end due to static; like our fifth grade science experiment? No, static-charged hair can literally kill our winter look. Prevent the unkempt, dry static hair by smoothing a pinch of your drugstore hand cream over your tresses, and confidently take the beanie off to transition your evening look for a night out.
Take care of your diet!
We think we can get away without drinking water in winter because we don’t feel thirsty and/or we need to pee too often, but the lack of water can show signs on your skin within a span of days. What we don’t realize is, water is not only good for our health, our body systems, it’s the basic medicine for beautiful skin. Keeping yourself hydrated by drinking water is very important to keep your skin looking fresh, glowy, plump and supple. And more so in winters, when we most avoid drinking water. So make sure you include a minimum of 8 glasses of water a day in your diet.
Speaking of diets, winter is the time we most reach out for comfort foods, that spread warmth through our cold-to-the-bone body. Skip out on the heavy and oily carbs and fats, opt for fresh fruits and veggies rich in antioxidants instead; (antioxidants protect your skin against damage, keeping it healthy looking). The likes of which include pomegranates, grapes, cranberries, blueberries and purple potatoes. Make and store mini portions of fruit salad in the freezer for days when you are running short on time.
Keep these 8 mistakes in mind and try to correct them as much as possible, and see a newer, better you this winter.
